Since autumn 1999, local people representing the village and the Methodist church in Glasshouses have been working together on a project to transform the Broadbelt Hall* next to the Church into an amenity for the whole village.
By taking such action now it is anticipated that the long-term viability of a currently under-used but valuable facility, the only public building in the village, will be safeguarded.

The building needs improvements and modernisation to its facilities, including the provision of access for the disabled, to make it an attractive asset for the use of the whole community. After refurbishment it will become a centre at the heart of the village for a wide range of social and educational activities for all age and interest groups. Groups who currently use the hall include the WI, the school, and the Village Association for meetings and events, but all who use the hall agree that the works listed in this leaflet are no longer simply desirable, but essential.

There is a saying: “Use it or lose it’. Together we can make Glasshouses Broadbelt Community Hall a place everyone will want to use. This leaflet contains information on the nature and extent of the improvements, how it is proposed the work should be funded, what has been done and who has promised what so far, and an invitation to YOU to get involved.

*Funds for the building of the hall in 1931 were given by Rev. John Broadbelt, a distinguished Methodist and originally native of Glasshouses

 THE WORK AND THE COST

Wherever possible we intend to use local contractors, but a start has already been made. Thanks to an anonymous donor there is a new noticeboard outside the hall for village events, a working party cut back overgrown shrubs and re-painted the railings and money towards the project was raised by two school children from a jumble sale. The approximate costings, which will form the basis of the budget which will be presented to potential grant-giving bodies and sponsors, lists the work that is necessary, and it will be seen that an important element of our bid is £5,000 worth of voluntary work and furnishings to be provided by the village. Promises so far include members of the WI who will source fabric and make new curtains, the Village Association will fund new furniture and offers to help with decorating will be taken up when the time comes!

THE PURPOSE

Glasshouses is an active community. The mill which once employed over 200 workers is now home to 30 small businesses; the children from the Primary School play a crucial role in the May Day festival; we have our shop and post office, WI, cricket teams and Village Association. With so much already going on and a population of  ??, the renovation of the only public building in the village, and one situated right at its physical heart, will provide not only a venue but a central focus for an even greater sense of community for all.

WE NEED YOUR HELP

The steering group (names below) want to hear from YOU. When we make our applications to funding bodies we need to be able to show them that the whole community is behind the project.

IF YOU ARE A LOCAL BUSINESS you can give money or offers of goods or  services to help with the whole project or to support a particular part of  it. AS AN INDIVIDUAL you too can give money, or promise to help with your time, skills and labour.

EVERY LITTLE WILL HELP!
